CHARLES SIDEBOTTOM is the Managing Partner of PPO Standards LLC. based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Prior to forming PPO Standards, Mr. Sidebottom was the Director, Corporate Standards for Medtronic, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He received a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University, and an M.Sc. in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri.  He is a registered professional engineer.  He is a Medtronic Technical Fellow, a Fellow of ASTM International, a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Medical instrumentation (AAMI) and was a Distinguished Standards Advisor in Medtronic’s Global Regulatory Affairs Organization.  He is a Subject Matter Expert on standardization for the World Medical Device Organization (WMDO) based in Ecublens, Switzerland.

Heavily involved in international standards work since 1987, Mr. Sidebottom served as Secretary of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Subcommittee (SC) 62A, Common aspects of electrical equipment used in medical practice, for over 22 years and continues to be actively involved in the work of the committee.  He served as Secretary of the International Standards Organization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 150/SC 5, Osteosynthesis and spinal devices for over 10 years, and is a member of the Executive Subcommittee of ASTM International Committee F04, Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices. He serves as a U.S. delegate to ISO/TC 150 and TC 210, and serves on many working groups and project teams including the ISO/IEC joint working group on application of risk management to medical devices and he is the convener of the ISO/TC 150 working group on fundamental standards.

ASTM International recognized his leadership in the medical devices standards arena by awarding him the Robert Fairer Award in 2005, the Patrick G. Laing Award in 2009, the Award of Merit in 2015, and was named a Fellow of ASTM, International in 2015.  AAMI presented him its inaugural Standards Developer Award in 2007 and the Association's Leadership and Achievement Award  in 2015.  He is only the eight person in AAMI's fifty year history to receive that award.  In 2017, Mr. Sidebottom received the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award, which is presented annually by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to recognize demonstrated leadership in promoting the important role of standardization in eliminating global barriers to trade.  Mr. Sidebottom is also a recipient of a 2017 FDA Leveraging/Collaboration Award as a member of the FDA-AAMI Use of Benefit-Risk Principles for Recalls Pilot Team.  Mr. Sidebottom was named an AAMI Fellow in 2019.

Mr. Sidebottom served twelve years on the AAMI Board of Directors including two years as its Chairman.  He has served on the ASTM International Board of Directors.  He is a member of ASTM International, a Life Member of the IEEE, an Emeritus Member of AAMI, and a member of SES - The Society for Standards Professionals.

Mr. Sidebottom has spoken and written frequently on the subjects of medical device labeling, symbols for medical devices, and medical device standardization.  He is the author of the book International Labeling Requirements for Medical Devices, Medical Equipment, and Diagnostic products, and has contributed several book chapters.
